THINGS TO KNOW: how licensing works
BRANDING: Because I work with companies on a collaborative basis, I ask that BARBARIAN branding be on your product and marketing. Usually this means the logo is embedded within the print itself and/or on the product labels and hangtags. This can be a co-brand where both of our logos are on the product OR just my branding, whatever makes the most sense. I will work with you to make sure the logo is applied well on the product and hangtags. I’m not into obtrusive branding. See an example here.
UNIQUE ART + EXCLUSIVITY: All designs are licensed to you as exclusive by design/product. During the term that you license the artwork no one else will have your design for your particular product. This helps your product stand out!
APPROVAL PROCESS: There is a cute lil extra quality check you get before the product goes to market. Often I’ve caught issues with products that others have missed. You simply send me images of the product via email and I usually get back to you within 24 hours with feedback. I see this as an important collaborative step. I’m not a particular picky art director — I believe in getting out a good product, not a perfect one. I will provide a Brand Style Guide so we’re on the same page.
CROSS-PROMOTION + PARTNERSHIP: The biggest difference between buying art outright and working with a licensed artist is that in addition to providing unique art that tells a story I will help sell the product via my over 43k social media and email followers. I will work with you to create a marketing plan that gets attention.
ART DIRECTION: My licensing packages are more than simply art for your use — you also get me as a resource, as fresh eyes. I’ve sold over $6M in merchandise and know what sells! Any of my collaborators will tell you I’m really fun to work with and love seeing projects move ahead. We’ll work in collections to build a cohesive set of products.
PRICING: Pricing is based on a variety of factors – how many designs you need, how many units you plan on making, your price point, where you plan on selling and more. Giving me as much info as you can helps me give you the best terms for your use.
REPORTING: I ask for quarterly sales reports to be sent to me so I can see how the products are selling. So helpful and necessary!
And I’ll lead you along the way…
TESTIMONIAL
“Barbra’s beautiful, unique art adds a fresh look to our product line-up — and has sold remarkably well out-of-the-gate, being one of our top sellers upon her launch! Because of that, we expanded her product line to three collections per year. We love seeing the evolution of her work — it’s both youthful and elevated, appealing to a wide age group.
We’ve enjoyed our ongoing collaboration with her, since 2017. She shows up fully, offering ideas and direction that help our products sell, and we are thankful for our partnership with her!” — Kelli Melzer, The LANG Companies
FAQ
Do we pick art from your portfolio or will you make custom art for my use?
In our collab we will pick art from my extensive portfolio of over 1000 designs. There’s sure to be designs that will work for your products. I add new designs regularly. If you have ideas or requests for new prints I’m always interested in hearing about them — and some times I fold those ideas into my work if I’m inspired!
OTHERWISE I offer an add-on for custom art if you are interested in something truly unique and exclusive to you. Ask about pricing for that.
Do you re-format your repeat patterns for licensee use?
Should you need a seamless repeat re-formatted for specific printing size requirements (such as fabric) that will need to be handled by your designer and sent to me for approval before use.
Do you sell your artwork outright?
I rarely sell full rights to my art, only for special projects.
What are you looking for in a licensee?
I usually work with larger well-established US/North America companies that make great product but am open to new/small/foreign biz if there’s a solid plan and product idea. Thank you for providing as much info as you can.
Do you create holiday, special occasion or religious/spiritual designs?
My vibe is more secular but If I feel compelled I will make a festive-looking “holiday” llama or bear. Haha. My brand is about a lifestyle — living exactly how you want to no matter what the day. I’m a science nerd and am deeply interested in psychology, human potential and the natural world. I tend to create everyday prints & patterns that celebrate the wonder of nature or a bold expression that pushes societal norms.
Thank you for stopping by.
